Nusa Penida is widely considered the best snorkeling area in Bali. Its four main sites are Manta Bay and Manta Point, where reef manta rays feed and visit cleaning stations, and Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, which have coral gardens, reef fish and green sea turtles. All are reached by traditional boat from Banjar Nyuh Harbour in 20 to 40 minutes. Mainland Bali also has decent snorkeling at Amed, Tulamben and Menjangan, but none of those sites have manta rays.

Reef manta rays live around Nusa Penida all year, so there is no closed season. Sightings are most consistent from April to October, Bali's dry season, when the sea is calmest and visibility is highest (15–30 m). From December to February the swell on the south coast is larger, so Manta Point is more often closed and boats run to Manta Bay instead. We give you the honest forecast the day before rather than sending you out into a rough crossing.

Included: the boat and fuel, an English-speaking snorkeling guide, mask, snorkel, fins, life jacket, drinking water and the marine park entry fee. Underwater GoPro photos and video are arranged in chat and quoted before the day. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, a dry bag, a hat and your swimwear worn under your clothes, because there are no changing rooms on the boat.

Yes, 10 years. Everyone on the boat must be at least 10; younger children cannot be carried under our licence. Children and teenagers are welcome and Wall Point and Manta Bay are ideal for them.

From Banjar Nyuh Harbour it is about 25 minutes to Manta Bay and about 40 minutes to Manta Point along the cliffs. Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay and Wall Point are all within 20–30 minutes.

Yes. Our guides carry a GoPro and can shoot your group at the mantas and the reef. Ask the crew before the trip for the price; photos and video are sent to you on WhatsApp the same day.

Yes. Every guest wears a life jacket, all snorkeling is done from the surface with no diving involved, and a guide stays in the water with the group. Tell us about your swimming ability when you book so a guide can stay beside you and, if you prefer, tow you on a ring buoy so you can float and watch without effort. Many of our guests have never snorkeled before.

Manta rays have no stinger and no interest in people; they are filter feeders. The real considerations are swell and current, not the animals. Trips run only when the harbour master clears conditions, every group is briefed before entry, life jackets are compulsory, and the boat stays alongside the group. Manta Point is more exposed than Manta Bay and can be choppy — if you are prone to seasickness, take a tablet an hour before departure and eat something light.

Shared boat trips cost IDR 200,000 per person for the two-hour Manta Bay trip and IDR 350,000 per person for the three-hour Manta Point trip. The full-day West Nusa Penida tour, which includes the fast boat crossing from Sanur, is IDR 850,000. Private charters start at IDR 1,500,000 per person: you pay more per head, and in return the boat carries only your group, leaves when you want and stays longer where you like. Hotel transfer in Bali is an optional extra charged per car, not per person.

Fast boats run from Sanur Harbour to Banjar Nyuh or Toya Pakeh on Nusa Penida and take about 45 minutes. First departures are around 07:00 and the last returns leave in the late afternoon. If you book a meet-at-harbour trip you buy your own fast boat ticket — message us and we will tell you exactly which departure to take. The full-day tour includes the crossing. On any trip we can also collect you from your hotel in Bali, charged per car.

If the harbour master closes the site or the crew judges the sea unsafe, we move you to a calmer site, reschedule you to another day, or refund you in full — your choice. Weather calls are made on the morning of the trip and sent to you on WhatsApp. We would rather move your trip than take you out in conditions that would ruin it.
