Why Snorkeling in Bali Should Be on Your Travel List

Bali is not only famous for temples, rice terraces, and vibrant culture—it is also one of the best snorkeling destinations in Southeast Asia. Positioned within the Coral Triangle, Bali’s waters are home to over 500 species of coral and 2,000 species of reef fish. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, the island offers a mix of shallow lagoons, vibrant reefs, and exciting drift snorkeling with larger marine life like manta rays and turtles.

If you’re searching for the best snorkeling in Bali, this guide covers everything you need to know: the top snorkeling spots, when to visit, and tips for an unforgettable underwater adventure.

Best Snorkeling Spots in Bali

1.

Amed & Tulamben – Shipwrecks and Vibrant Coral

Located on Bali’s northeast coast, Amed and Tulamben are world-renowned for their stunning underwater landscapes.

Snorkeling here is easy and family-friendly with calm waters and beach access.

2.

Nusa Penida – Manta Rays and Crystal Waters

A short speedboat from Sanur takes you to Nusa Penida, where snorkeling becomes truly magical.

Tip: Combine a snorkeling trip with a land tour to visit Kelingking Beach and Broken Beach for a full island adventure.

3.

Menjangan Island – Bali’s Hidden Paradise

Located in the Bali Barat National Park, Menjangan Island is less crowded and offers pristine snorkeling conditions.

Because of its protected status, this island remains one of Bali’s healthiest coral reef systems.

4.

Blue Lagoon (Padang Bai) – Beginner Friendly

For those new to snorkeling in Bali, Blue Lagoon near Padang Bai is the perfect choice.

5.

Lovina Beach – Snorkeling with Dolphins

Located in North Bali, Lovina is famous for its early morning dolphin tours. Many operators combine dolphin watching with reef snorkeling for a full experience.

Best Time for Snorkeling in Bali

The dry season (April–October) is the best time to snorkel in Bali. During these months, seas are calm, visibility is at its peak, and marine life is abundant. Early mornings usually offer the clearest water and the most active marine creatures.

If you’re visiting during the rainy season (November–March), snorkeling is still possible in sheltered areas like Amed and Padang Bai.

Thank you Gede from Family Trips Bali for helping make the Manta Ray and Crystal Bay Snorkelling experience a wonderful and memorable one. I was so pleased when you helped me with ferry tickets , I added an island tour with Gede later on. Initially I thought the diving was on Bali itself as I did not do sufficient research before booking. Gede helped me sort out my logistics with clear directions. The dive boat guide he found us, Wayan, helped my teenage daughter and my wife as they had some motion sickness. He was reassuring and proactive. However we all got to see beautiful manta rays. A pair of them swam close to us and were amazingly friendly, it was a dream come true for me. I used to dive but had no chance to see manta rays but this time I got to see them together with my children and wife. I thought they would have to scuba dive but snorkelling was more accessible for us. For the island tour add on, our driver Ali was equally helpful. Some parts of the climb to see the view were steep but he was patient and encouraging, and helped watch out for our safety and also took amazing videos and photos for us. Overall please book with this operator. They are quite thorough and responsive to queries. And responsible. Attached are some complimentary GoPro shots for all group members so we could focus on the experience itself. Very thoughtful and good value for money, recommend.
